Total Hip Replacement

Minimal Invasive Total Hip Replacement Surgery

In the past, incisions for total hip replacements have been about 8 - 12 inches and sometimes longer depending on the patient size. These days, there has been a big push to decrease not only the skin incision size but to minimize the surgical trauma to the underlying tissues. This potentially has the benefit of faster rehabilitation and less down time. Currently, there are several different techniques to accomplish this goal. For selected patients I use an anterolateral minimal invasive approach to the hip. The skin incision has been markedly decreased to 3 - 4 inches. Using specialized equipment, visualization and exposure has not been compromised. Despite the enthusiasm for minimal invasive techniques the goal of total hip replacement surgery is to place the implants into the hip with utmost precision and fixation. This is absolutely key and will not be compromised even at the cost of a slightly larger incision. Correct orientation of the implant and how well it is fixed to the bone determines the long term success of the overall surgery.
